Scleral Lens Tip | Inserting Lenses With a Vented Cup

One of the most challenging components of scleral lens wear can be insertion and removal.

Many people like to use a DMV vented scleral cup in order to insert their lenses, which can ensure the lens is flat and makes it easier to handle. Since you want to insert the scleral lens directly onto the center of your eye to vault the cornea, it is helpful to pick a “target” to look at, so you can keep your eye looking straight ahead. A great target to use is the hole of the DMV vented scleral cup, so that you know your cornea and the lens are perfectly aligned during insertion.

Additional Tips For Inserting Scleral Lenses

Other helpful tips to remember while inserting your scleral lenses are to make sure your eyelids are fully out of the way of the lens and to completely fill the scleral lens with saline. This prevents the eyelids from knocking the scleral lens out of position or off of your inserter and can help prevent bubbles from getting under the lens during insertion.

PRO TIP: Try a vented DMV applicator for easier insertion, especially if you’re new to this!
