This is an excellent tip for scleral lens wearers who experience difficulty with lens removal, particularly when the lens feels "stuck.”
Why this works
Scleral lenses can form a tight seal against the eye. The “seal” is one of the great things about a scleral lens since it locks in much-needed moisture and doesn’t rotate on an eye that really needs lens stability.
However, this can cause some people to face removal challenges, especially after long wear or in dry environments. Using a preservative-free rewetting drop throughout the day can minimize some of the dryness felt at the end of the day, especially just before removal.
Some patients use a clean, dry finger to gently rotate the lens, and others use their DMV remover to help break this seal. Rock the lens left and right a couple of times. Using a DMV, rock the lens left, right, center, and pull away from the eye.
PRO TIP: Think of it like trying to get a plate off the counter when it’s upside down and wet; you move it to the edge to get some air under it. This is the same concept.
