Improving Scleral Lens Fogging with Tangible Hydra-PEG

Dr. Woo presented this case study as part of a webinar series educating eye care professionals about using Tangible Hydra-PEG with a variety of different lenses to treat a variety of ocular conditions.

Dr. Woo found that Tangible Hydra-PEG was a great solution to improve scleral fogging problems with a patient who otherwise had an excellent fit.

Case Summary:

One of Dr. Woo’s patients was experiencing fluctuating vision and dryness issues with her custom soft lenses. Together with her patient, Dr. Woo decided to try a scleral lens for more stable vision and dry eye improvement.

The lens fitting went well, and the new lens provided great vision (20/25) and comfort. However, two weeks later, the patient returned to clinic indicating that her lenses were fogging after a couple of hours. She reported seeing particles in the fluid layer that were resolved with rinsing, but the fogging would return. Dr. Woo confirmed in a slit lamp evaluation that posterior tear film debris was visible.

Her first attempt to address fogging was to change filling solution. That was not successful, so she moved to change lens care solution. When that did not work, she had the lenses coated with Tangible Hydra-PEG. After one week of wear with the coated lenses, the patient was delighted to report no more problems with fogging and the ability to wear her lenses for 12 hours without removing them. The fogging resistance persisted for more than eight months.

In her summary, Dr. Woo notes that Tangible Hydra-PEG can be added anywhere in the fitting process, even with the first lens fit, and can be considered to add to all lenses.

It is not always obvious what patients may be prone to deposits and fogging prior to dispensing lenses. Because of that, Tangible Hydra-PEG could be considered as a preventative measure to solve not only deposits and fogging, but also comfort issues, before they present themselves. By avoiding these issues from the outset, eye professionals can provide their patients with both great vision, and a comfortable and convenient quality of life.
